From Hoodline: In SF with less police spending, youth programs could be a vision of the future

by

Huckleberry’s Community Assessment & Resource Center (CARC) was featured in Hoodline’s article In a San Francisco with less police spending, youth programs could be a vision of the future.

This piece demonstrates the effectiveness of diversion programs like Huckleberry’s Community Assessment & Resource Center (CARC).
“Operating chiefly in communities of color — Bayview, Hunters Point, Western Addition, and the Haight — Huckleberry’s Community Assessment and Resource Center (CARC) is designed to break the cycle of incarceration for kids and teens.
Youth arrested for non-violent offenses are paired with a staff member and case manager, who connect them with tutoring, mentoring, mental health services and job referrals.”

CARC staff (past and present) at the program’s 20th Anniversary celebration in 2018.

Huckleberry Youth Programs

Thank you to BAYAC AmeriCorps for featuring Project READY’s Krystal Johnson in their Member Mondays series this week!

Huckleberry’s Project READY, a Huckleberry justice program, helps students with behavioral or truancy issues make improvements in school and avoid contact with the juvenile justice system.

Project READY partners with two San Francisco Middle Schools: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic Middle School and Willie L. Brown, Jr. Middle School.

The program works with students from the spring of 7th grade through the fall semester of 9th grade, delivering: academic support & intervention in and out of the classroom, social emotional learning/development, individual & family mental health services and individual case management, combined with parental support and education.
