Mia’s Story

by

When Mia* walked through our doors at 17, she had just lost her family home for being transgender. She was also weeks away from high school graduation with dreams of becoming a nurse.

Most teenagers shouldn’t have to choose between their identity and a roof over their head. But Mia faced that impossible choice and chose herself.

Mia came to Huckleberry seeking services and got connected to a therapist who suggested Huckleberry might help with housing. Mia showed up during drop-in hours at our Huckleberry Youth Health Center, uncertain what to expect.

What happened next wasn’t about rescuing Mia. It was about walking alongside her as she built the future she envisioned.

That day, she was connected with a case manager who explained their role and began exploring her need for housing support. They developed a plan together – waiting until Mia turned 18 in a month to access the youth housing system. Over the next month, they checked in regularly. Mia stayed in control of her timeline and her choices.

On her 18th birthday, her case manager made the referral. Soon after, Mia was placed in long-term housing specifically for LGBTQ+ youth. Stable housing meant her nursing school dreams suddenly felt achievable.

Together, Mia and her case manager navigated the FAFSA and Pell Grant applications. They connected her to gender-affirming healthcare through her insurance. When Mia announced excitedly that she was starting hormones and wanted to change her name legally, her case manager helped prepare the court paperwork.

A few weeks later, they stood together at the courthouse as Mia handed the clerk her declaration. When the judge granted her name and gender marker change, it wasn’t just a legal victory; it was Mia claiming her identity in every official space that had denied it.

Today, Mia is a full-time nursing student and works as a caregiver. She lives near her school in stable housing. She carries her California ID everywhere, not because she has to, but because it finally reflects who she’s always been.

Mia succeeded because of her own determination. But she also succeeded because when she walked through our doors at her most vulnerable moment, we had the resources to show up.
