Marisol, First-Generation College Student, HWA Alum

by

Marisol – HWA Marin, Sonoma State University

Marisol joined HWA while she was in 8th grade at San Rafael High School and says, “It was the best thing that ever happened to me. Honestly, it was my second home.” HWA became a family affair for Marisol, as it does for a majority of HWA students. “My parents knew all of the Huckleberry staff. They were clueless about college, but HWA case managers sat down with them and explained everything about the college process.” While she was in the program, she took advantage of Huckleberry’s clinic and counseling services, and says, “I really bonded with my academic case manager. I could go to her with anything.”

Marisol originally considered attending SF State after high school but HWA staff encouraged her to attend Sonoma State University. “They gave me the support I needed my first year of college and they helped me get a scholarship and an internship stipend. I’m so thankful for them.” Marisol will graduate with a degree in Sociology in summer 2018.
