Huckleberry Featured in the SF Standard’s “‘We risk it all’: Bay Area nonprofits reel from Trump funding cuts and chaos”

by

Huckleberry Youth Programs and Huckleberry House were featured in The San Francisco Standard‘s recent article:  “‘We risk it all’: Bay Area nonprofits reel from Trump funding cuts and chaos.”

FROM THE ARTICLE:

Funding is back on for the city’s Huckleberry Youth Programs, but that hasn’t left Executive Director Douglas Styles feeling secure about the future, with new orders and holds coming faster than he can keep up.

“Our naiveté was [thinking] that there’ll be some warning … and we can prepare a bit more,” he said. “But it happened very quickly.”

About a quarter of the budget behind Huckleberry’s shelter comes from the federal government. Styles said that if that cash suddenly goes away, he is determined to keep the shelter running, but “it would mean reductions in services and a lot of painful decisions about staffing.”

Huckleberry Youth Programs

⭐ Last week marked the first week back for SFUSD, and the red carpet was rolled out for students at Willie L. Brown, Jr. Middle School. ⭐

Huckleberry's SEEDS of Change team proudly welcomed students back, bringing positive energy and cheer as students arrived, setting a welcoming tone for the school year and making the youth feel celebrated! 🎉 (Pictured is Lily, SEEDS Intervention Specialist). 🎉

Huckleberry’s SEEDS program, part of the SF Youth Justice Initiative, partners with students and families to strengthen school engagement, reduce absenteeism and discipline issues, and support a successful transition from middle to high school — all with the long-term goal of preventing youth involvement in the juvenile justice system.
