Huzaifa, First-Generation College Student, HWA Alum

Huzaifa HWA-SF:, Research Assistant at the Center for Labor Studies & Sociology Peer Advisor at UC Santa Cruz

Although Huzaifa was accepted to a four-year university, he made the decision to start at a community college after high school and aim higher for a school in the UC system. He attended City College of San Francisco, frequently visiting HWA for transfer guidance and extra academic support which he attributes to his college success.  After two years, Huzaifa transferred to UC Santa Cruz and changed his course of study from science to sociology to align with his true passion.

Huckleberry gave me the tools to believe in who I am and to follow my heart.  They were very open with me. They accepted me and respected me for who I am. Without them, I would not be doing what I really want to do.”  In the fall of 2018, Huzaifa will pursue a graduate degree in Islamic Studies at the Graduate Theological Union. “I hope to understand the deeper roots of my religion and focus on issues that are structurally marginalizing American Muslims today.”
