San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom held a press conference on Friday, January 15, at the new site of the Huckleberry Community Assessment and Referral Center (CARC) to announce the city's new program that will target chronic truancy and close the achievement gap in San Francisco schools.

The TARC (Truancy Assessment and Referral Center) will be run in conjunction with Huckleberry's CARC Program and will also be located at 44 Gough Street.

Moving San Francisco Pupil Personnel to 44 Gough, this new public/private partnership includes the SF Unified School District, the SF Police Department, and the SF Juvenile Probation Department.  The two community-based organizations managing the project are Huckleberry and Urban Services of the YMCA.

A recent Department General Order (DGO) for the San Francisco Police Department explicitly states that police officers are required to contact CARC in all juvenile arrest cases.  As a result of the revised DGO, the door has been opened for Huckleberry staff to participate in the creation and implementation of new trainings for the Police Department on Juvenile procedures.  With the revised DGO and new trainings in place, it is expected that a greater percentage of arrested youth will be brought to and cited at CARC rather than cited to court or booked at the Juvenile Justice Center.
