It is the first dawning of what will soon come to be known as the "Summer of Love. February, 1967 The Haight-Ashbury District of San Francisco has begun to explode with the activity of the late sixties' youth movement, and young people from across the nation are converging on San Francisco to participate in the jubilant moment of change and newfound freedom. Many of those arriving in the city are runaway teens who have left their home and families in other cities and states and who wander the Haight without money, friends, or connections. The Diggers, a group in the Haight-Ashbury providing free food and shelter, becomes aware of the intensifying runaway situation and brings it to the attention of the San Francisco community.
